Located at the south foot of Yuexiu Hill, Sanyuan Daoist Temple is the largest and oldest Daoist architecture in Guangzhou with a history of over 1,600 years. This temple was built in 319 A.D., the 2nd year of Emperor Daxing's reign, the first emperor of the Eastern Jin Dynasty. Originally named Yuegang Yuan, the temple was the place for Baogu, daughter of Nanhai Governor Baoliang, to cultivate Taoism and practise medicine. Because it was located in the north of the city, it was also called "North Temple" by later generations.

It was then renamed to that of  Sanyuan Temple after renovation in 1643, the 16th year of Emperor Chongzhen's reign in Ming Dynasty, enshrining the three divine officials of the sky, earth and water. In 1700, the 39th year of Emperor Kangxi's reign in Qing Dynasty, it was expanded into a magnificent and lofty temple and became a famous Daoist temple in Lingnan. It was renovated during Emperor Qianlong, Tongzhi and Guangxu's reign.

The Sanyuan Temple was severely damaged during the anti-Japanese War. Later, Abbot He Chengrui was able shortly afterwards to raise money to repair it. However, unfortunately, during the Cultural Revolution, the temple was ruined again. Starting in 1982, the Guangzhou Daoist circle launched yet again an overall renovation of it. Now the temple has nearly 100 Daoist architectures, enjoying a unique layout among the ancient architectures in Guangzhou.

The Sanyuan Temple has nopw become both a holiday resort in Guangzhou and a famous Daoist temple in Lingnan, with numerous pilgrims and tourists coming in a continuous stream. It is the office location of Guangzhou Daoist Association.
