        Highlights

If the traces of Guangzhou history can be found in the old central axis, then the future of Guangzhou can be seen in the new axis. In this new central axis that stretches from Guangzhou East Railway Station to Tianhe Sports Center, from Zhujiang New Town to Huacheng Square and Haixinsha, you will marvel at the beauty, prosperity and advancement of this first-tier city in China. You will also get a better picture of why Guangzhou is called "a city saloon".

See the following for details about great places to see on the new central axis:

        ● Canton Tower
        ● Haixinsha
        ● Huacheng Square
        ● Guangzhou New Library
        ● Guangdong Museum
        ● Guangzhou Opera House
        ● Guangzhou No.2 Children's Palace
        ● Waterfall scene of Guangzhou East Railway Square and CITIC Plaza
        ● Tianhe Sports Center

        ● Canton Tower

The Chigang Pagoda, which rises more than fifty meters near the Pearl River, could have never imagined that 380 years later, another tower more than 400 meters taller, would emerge in a spot closer to the Pearl River and providing a much wider view. This new tower has made its way to every tourist's camera and mobile phone, becoming the new totem of Guangzhou as a popular destination for tourists. This tower has a humble but perpetual name – "Canton Tower".

The Canton Tower is the world's tallest free-standing television tower, boasting an overall height of 600 meters, with a 450-meter-tall tower body and a 150-meter-tall antenna.

Looking north from the Canton Tower, visitors will find that the mountains on the northern suburbs of the city are exactly what was described by Qing-dynasty historian Qiu Juchuan in his book "Ancient Records of the City of Rams" – "The Baiyun Mountain, the top mountain in Nanyue Kingdom, stretches from Dayu to Sancheng, dotted by more than thirty peaks, all of which are familiar names." The mountains tapered off from the northern suburbs of the city to merge with the alluvia plain of the Pearl River. The CITIC Plaza Building on the axis resembles a fluttering bird headed to the due north. The Huacheng Square is like a treasured vase drawing in auspicious essence from all directions. The western one of the Crystal Towers, West Tower, stands erect on the western side of the square. The new facility for the Guangzhou Library, dubbed "a beautiful book"; the new facility for the Guangdong Museum, whose physical shapes are reminiscent of the two Chinese characters for "Guangdong"; and the Guangzhou Opera House, shaped like "two round boulders", are pointing to Haixinsha, a "mammoth ship" ready to sail out, and to the soaring Canton Tower, through the directional arrows on the square.

Since the commencement of its construction on November 25, 2005, the Canton Tower has been attracting much attention from the public. Many residents contributed their suggestions of a name for the tower. Through scientific tallying and integrated analysis, the Academy of Sciences eventually decided on the name "Canton Tower". A launch ceremony was held for the tower on September 29, 2010, following by all-lights-on ceremony on the next day. The tower was officially opened to the public on October 1, 2010.

Moreover, it is a place where Guangzhou's past meets its future. As Guangzhou's old axis, the Pearl River runs through Haixinsha, giving the island a historic touch. Signaling Guangzhou's future prosperity, the new axis extends all the way from south to north, with Haixinsha as its central point.
