On April 26, "Decorative Patterns in History: Exhibition of the Pattern on Relics Unearthed from the Archaeological Site of Nanyue Kingdom Palace" kicked off at the King's Palace exhibition area of the Nanyue King Museum. Over 200 pieces (sets) of cultural relics are on display, through which visitors can glimpse the artistic features of decorative patterns and the unique customs and social changes in the Lingnan area from different periods.
The archaeological site in the exhibition area of the Nanyue King Museum was once the royal palace of the Nanyue Kingdom in the Qin and Han dynasties and the Southern Han Kingdom during the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period (420–589), and it is located in the centre of the old city of modern-day Guangzhou. Based on the pattern of cultural relics unearthed from the site, the exhibition showcases the ancient Lingnan culture, the prosperity of the Silk Road, and the civilization communication between China and abroad.
For example, from the Three Kingdoms period to the Northern and Southern Dynasties (386–589), Buddhism was introduced to the Lingnan area by sea, profoundly influencing social life and popular aesthetics. The lotus pattern, a common image of Buddhism, began to appear in large numbers in architecture, porcelain, and other fields.
During the Tang and Song dynasties, China started to set up officials and authorities in Guangzhou to manage foreign trade. Porcelain products from all over the country were gathered and distributed in the city, driving the development of the local ceramics industry, and ceramics were decorated in various ways, including engraving, stamping, moulding, and painting.
In addition, a special area has also been set up to display cultural and creative products inspired by the patterns of cultural relics, such as the brick patterns in the Nanyue Kingdom and the Southern Han Kingdom.
