        Christianity

Shamian Christian Church was an architectural  masterpiece in the late Qing Dynasty. In 1864, the Church of England decided to establish a Christian Church for foreign settlers in Shamian leased territory, Guangzhou. Since the completion of the new baroque architecture, it had been managed by English pastors until World War II. After the war, the Chinese government took back the leased territory and the Shamian Christian Church was handed over to Chinese people as the Anglican Church South China Diocese.

Besides the existing chapel and a two-storey parsonage, the Shamian Christian Church had a dedicated nearby graveyard for its followers during the leased territory period. At that time, the western vessels coming to Guangdong often experienced adverse weather, so the followers that were buried here were mostly distressed seamen. There are still several seamen's tombstones that are still evident today behind the church, in the old graveyard area.

In 1992, the Shamian Christian Church resumed normal religious activities. And in November 1996, the Shamian architectural complex was identified as the National Key Historical and Cultural Heritage Protection Unit by the Sate Council. Shamian Christian Church was on the list. Guangdong Christian Council made extensive maintenance on it around 2005, and since then the  Shamian Christian Church has been further renovated.

It now has two full-time pastoral staff, who are both graduates from Guangdong Union Theological College, and besides regular brethren meetings, Shamian Christian Church also organizes their brethren to visit orphanages, nursing homes and engage in volunteering service and public charities on a regular basis.
