        Buddhism

Buddhism was introduced into Guangdong during the Western Han Dynasty and Eastern Han Dynasty through the land via the west regions and the sea via Guangzhou. Henceforth, it made progressive development. In 256 A.D. of the Three Kingdoms (220-265) period, Zhijiang Liangjie, a native of the west regions came to Guangzhou translating the Buddhist sutras. This is the earliest record on the introduction of Buddhism into Guangdong so far. The top four Buddhist temples(Guangxiao Temple, Liurong Temple, Hualin Temple, and Haitong Temple) witnessed the brilliant and ancient history of Guangzhou.

During the Sui Dynasty and Tang Dynasty, the Buddhism, Confucianism and Daoism formed a trilogy, laying objective conditions for the integration of the three religions. They also tended to integrate in theory. With the gradual decline of the Tang Dynasty, the conflicts among the three religions were not so tense and frequent like in the past. The three religions gradually embraced a new phase of amalgamation.

In Guangdong, there are many Buddhism sects such as Zen Buddhism, Jintu Zong (Pure Land) and Vajrayana, among which Zen Buddhism has the most followers.
