Guangzhou Baiyun International Convention Center, with the total investment exceeding 4 billion yuan, is the largest comprehensive convention center in South China. In the World Architecture Festival held in Barcelona in 2008, Baiyun International Convention Center, by virtue of super large scale in such buildings and the bold ideas of introducing natural landscape, stood out in the fierce competition, won the highest honor in public buildings, and became the only award-winning architectural project among the eligible buildings from China.

Baiyun International Convention Center is situated in a very special place, adjacent to Baiyun Mountain, the fresh air city lung beloved by Guangzhou people, at the east and Baiyun New Town under planning at the west. The design concept of Baiyun International Convention Center is that of "integrating nature and city-building a city inside the mountain". The whole building, like "a dialogue between mountain scenery and the city", with the mountain and the city successfully creates a unified entity between historic landscape and the future visions for a modern progressive city.

In architectural design, five north-south parallel buildings, including the convention center and hotels, line up irregularly. The center, which is layered, innovative yet not gaudy, effectively making use of sunlight and ventilation, not only lives up to energy saving and environmental protection, but also provides conditions for the building to be cooled by natural air. Compared with a few large buildings in Guangzhou, the design teams of Guangzhou Baiyun International Convention Center are comparatively unique and combine Chinese and Western elements in the design.

In the beginning, both Chinese and Western architectural design teams worried about the selection of colors for exterior decoration of the building. Once when they investigated Guangzhou beforehand, on seeing the Baiyun Mountain and the tomb of the King of South Yue Kingdom, as well as the fascinating red, everyone's eyes lighted up because they realized that red sandstone is the most suitable choice. Nowadays, the red sandstones are embedded all over Baiyun International Convention Center. These natural materials which reveal the context and history of Baiyun Mountain, present an architectural beauty fusing ancient architecture and modern Guangzhou Baiyun International Convention Center, with a total investment of 3.1 billion yuan, is a large-scale comprehensive convention centre considering convention as its mainstay and exhibition, commerce, hotel and other facilities as its supporting functions. It covers an area of about 250,000 square meters, with a total construction area of 316,000 square meters. The main buildings include B, C and D Convention and Exhibition Centers as well as A and E Oriental International Convention Hotels.
