Glimpse into exquisite jade wares nearly 3,000 years ago
        Update: 2024-01-15     Source: GDToday

On January 12, an exhibition of the Baoji Bronze Ware Museum's jade collection kicked off at the King's Palace exhibition area of the Nanyue King Museum in Guangzhou. It displays 123 pieces (sets) of jade artifacts unearthed from significant archaeological sites in Baoji City, northwest China's Shaanxi Province, including the tomb of Yu State during the Western Zhou Dynasty (1046-771 BC).

With a history spanning over 2,700 years, Baoji was the location of the Yu State and a pivotal site for the excavation of bronze and early jade artifacts. In traditional Chinese culture, jade holds numerous auspicious meanings and serves as an embodiment of ritual etiquette. It was often crafted into various ceremonial objects, playing a widespread role in sacrifices, symbols of authority, funeral culture, and more.

In this exhibition, visitors can take a look at ceremonial objects like jade rings and jade discs, decorative artifacts such as jade fish, jade birds, and jade oxen, as well as some unfinished jade pieces. It will offer you a glimpse into the exquisite craftsmanship of the jade wares around 3,000 years ago.

As the Chinese zodiac Year of the Dragon is around the corner, Zhai Huiping,  deputy director of the Baoji Bronze Ware Museum, recommended visitors to see the jade dragon, which has a lustrous texture and was exquisitely carved. Furthermore, Zhai added that the exhibition also features highlights like a jade deer and various artifacts that showcase the craftsmanship involved in jade carving in ancient China.
