Have you watched I AM WHAT I AM (雄獅少年), an animated film inspired by the ancient tradition of lion dance? Its adapted musical is set for a global premiere at the Guangzhou Opera House from January 11 to 14, 2024, featuring a stellar cast, including Hong Kong actor and singer Jordan Chan Siu-chun and Singaporean singer Kit Chan.
Set in Guangdong province, I AM WHAT I AMfollows the journey of A Juan, a left-behind teenager, who attends a lion dance competition in Guangzhou with his friends after training under master Xian Yu Qiang. This inspiring story portrays the courageous pursuit of dreams by an ordinary adolescent.
In this musical, Jordan Chan Siu-chun will portray Xian Yu Qiang, the once-famous lion dance king, while Kit Chan will act as his wife, A Zhen, both of whom accompany the lion dance team on their journey of growth. Directed by He Nian, this production has also invited Zhao Weibin, a provincial-level inheritor of intangible cultural heritage, to serve as the lion dance advisor.
Additionally, the musical features nearly 20 original songs that blend diverse music styles, including traditional drum music, pop, rock, ballads, local operas, folk songs, flamenco, and more. The powerful sound of the live band, consisting of keyboards, guitars, bass, drums, percussion, violin, cello, and flute, is set to inspire the audience.
