A photo and book exhibition, featuring the historical and present stories of the people of Guangdong and Aotearoa, New Zealand, as well as New Zealand literature, is underway at the Guangzhou Library from now till October 31.
2023 marked the 51st anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between New Zealand and China. In celebration of the longstanding diplomatic ties, the exhibition displays 47 photos highlighting the people-to-people exchanges between Guangdong and New Zealand, as well as the development of Guangzhou and Auckland's sister city relationship.
Nearly 300 New Zealand-originated books showcased in the exhibition have been donated to Guangzhou Library, and all will be permanently available for readers to borrow. The books are for all ages to enjoy, and cover a range of fields, including New Zealand literature, culture, tourism, arts, Maori topics, people and children's books.
Guangzhou and Auckland established a sister city relationship in 1989, and since then, they have enjoyed active engagements across government, business, trade, education, culture, and tourism. In fact, Guangdong is the place where the earliest Chinese migrants to New Zealand hailed from.
"We are excited to open the New Zealand book and photo exhibition, as through literature, these stories, and photos of moments in time, all help to foster and build cultural understanding and exchange," said Rachel Crump, the New Zealand Consul-General, at the opening ceremony of the exhibition held on the afternoon of October 14. "The exhibition acknowledges the important role Guangdong plays in our relationship but also provides a deeper understanding of our historical people-to-people connections," she furthered.

Moreover, New Zealand Chinese writers Lily Lee and Ruth Lam also shared some of their families' stories and experiences of migration to New Zealand at the opening ceremony. They are all descendants of some of the earliest Chinese migrants to New Zealand, and both are known as the authors of the book entitled Sons of the Soil: Chinese Market Gardeners in New Zealand, which depicts the early immigration life of overseas Chinese in New Zealand and has also been included in the donated book list to Guangzhou Library.
