Guangzhou is the capital city of Guangdong Province and has been positioned as a national central city. As an important gateway to China, it functions as an international business and trade center, a S&T, educational and cultural center and a comprehensive transportation hub. Falling right at the geometric center of the Asia-Pacific region, it borders on the South China Sea and is adjacent to Hong Kong SAR and Macao, hence reputed as the Southern Gate of China. Currently the city has a total area of 7,434.4 square kilometers and a permanent resident population of over 14 million under its administration.
